About Mr. K

Harry Katopodis was an award-winning editor and webmaster for the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM). He won 41 journalism awards in 12 years. Katopodis received the highest award in the IAM on September 22, 2004, The Robert J. Kalaski Award for Distinguished and Effective Journalism. He also has had several freelance articles published.

In addition to his writing, Katopodis worked several years as a sportscaster on radio and cable TV co-hosting shows with Detroit Tigers Milt WilcoxDave Lapoint and Mike Henneman. The highlight of his broadcasting career was covering the 1984 World Series when the Detroit Tigers won the World Championship.

Mr. Katopodis holds a BA from the University of Detroit in communications. He earned a post-bachelor degree teaching certificate at Eastern Michigan University and a journalism endorsement at Madonna University. Katopodis was a teacher of digital journalism, newspaper, broadcast journalism, debate and US history at the Digital Arts and Sciences Academy/Highland Park Community High School in Highland Park, MI. His students have been on the set of the movie Highland Park starring Danny Glover, Billy Burke, and Bo Derek and ABC TV’s Detroit 1-8-7. (His students are extras in the movie Highland Park.) He later worked as a speech/drama teacher for the Plymouth-Canton Community School District in the Shared Time Program. He also taught speech/drama at Chandler Park Academy High School in Harper Woods, MI. Currently he is the graphic arts/printing and journalism/newspaper teacher at Hamtramck High School in Hamtramck, MI. Katopodis is married and has three children.

Mr. Katopodis did a summer internship in 2009 at The Oakland Press sponsored by the Michigan Interscholastic Press Association (MIPA) and the Michigan Press Association Foundation. After his internship he stayed on as a “stringer” (part-time) reporter. “Being a journalist while teaching journalism and newspaper gives me credibilty,” said Katopodis.
